We needed multiple independent consumers — fraud-check, ledger-update — to read the same events without blocking each other, and Kafka's log-based model lets each one track its own offset instead of the message being removed once one consumer reads it.

I'd add idempotency keys from day one. We didn't, and a retried delivery caused a double-charge in production before we caught it — that's the one thing I'd fix before anything else.
